A BEVERLEY student has beaten off competition from hundreds of people across the Humber region to win a top award.
Shannon Lockyer, 15, a pupil at Longcroft School, has been awarded a Humber Education Business Partnership Award (EBP) for her work in her diploma course in creative media. She was nominated by the school for her exceptional work in the subject area.

The awards are designed to reward the achievements of young people, educators, businesses and their employees.

From hundreds of nominations, the judges selected 45 young people, teachers and business from across the Humber region to receive Awards for Work Experience, Professional Development, Young Apprenticeships, Diplomas, Aimhigher and Enterprise. The awards were handed out in front of 300 people at a ceremony earlier this month.

Shannon's mum Pam said she was very proud of her daughter's achievement. She said: "Shannon's one of those teenagers who does not hang around on streets and is an example that all teenagers are not the same. I'm very proud of her."

Sandra Cooper, General Manager of the Humber EBP said: "Every year, we reward the achievements of businesses, teachers and learners that have made a real contribution in forging links between education and the world of work.

"Ultimately, this is helping young people through practical experience and teaching, to have a greater understanding of what to expect when they themselves eventually leave education. We are seeing so many examples of young people across the Humber region changing their approach to learning that it makes all the hard work worthwhile."

The EBP awards are now in their seventh year. They provide an important service linking education and business across the Humber sub-region. Organisers aim to work with a wide range of businesses to ensure young people are well equipped to join tomorrow's workforce.

Shannon Lockyer received her award from Sandra Cooper from Humber EBP and MP Grahan Stuart.
