The Yorkshire in Bloom campaign has been officially launched for 2010, with thousands of volunteers in almost 100 communities registering to take part in this county-wide contest.
Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Judith Elliott (MBI Morley South) and Councillor John Procter, Executive Member for Leisure and Chief Whip of the Conservative Group attended the event, which was held on 2nd February in the prestigious setting of 'T
he Mansion House' in Roundhay Park in Leeds.
They marked the occasion by cutting a celebration cake specially made to mark the start of the new Yorkshire in Bloom year.
Officially opening the event, Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Judith Elliott said: "It's a great pleasure to be involved in this year's launch. In Bloom is particularly significant for me as I am Chair of Morley in Bloom, so I have first hand knowledge of the great benefits of the Bloom work.
"There are 40 In Bloom groups in Leeds city alone, and this multiplies across the county, with 1,000s of volunteers working to improve their local area. What a duller and lesser place Yorkshire would be without the Bloom work."
Chris Beard, Chair of Yorkshire in Bloom, said: "We wish all of the entrants a very successful In Bloom season. Their efforts in 'cleaning up and greening up' their local area improves the environment for each and every one of us. Our county will also be well represented in this year's national Britain in Bloom campaign, with Leeds, Wetherby, Cayton, Beighton, Scarborough and Harrogate all going for gold"
