PICTURESQUE stately home Sledmere House is to play host to a special garden show on Sunday May 18.
Each summer many visitors return to Sledmere House to enjoy and be inspired by the award winning gardens.

At the very heart of the Sledmere Estate, with its picture postcard estate village, Sledmere House is the home of Sir Tatton Sykes who takes a keen interest in the gardens.

Years ago Sir Tatton was lucky enough to secure the services of Brian Hutchinson as head gardener, who was persuaded - some say quite easily - to postpone full time retirement when his post as Head Gardener at Castle Howard came to an end.

Together Sir Tatton and Brian, have overseen a renaissance of the gardens at Sledmere and now hardly a season goes by without some major project or improvement.

This winter the reinstatement of an old path in the rare 18th century octagonal walled garden will allow visitors to enjoy more fully some of the wall side borders of which there are now plans to extend further.

The unusual configuration of the perimeter and dividing walls provides a series of differing micro climates and thus opportunity for a great diversity of planting.

Three years ago Sledmere House launched its Garden Show to provide many visitors with a chance to further indulge their passion for plants and maybe select a choice specimen or two for their own borders.

Now well supported by a diverse range of specialist nurseries and suppliers of gardening and garden products it is fast becoming a 'must do' day out for many Yorkshire garden lovers.

The gates open for the Garden Show at 10am.
