THE Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, the Hon. Mrs Susan Cunliffe-Lister, of Burton Agnes, has called on people to nominate local voluntary groups for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
The award is a prestigious national honour, equivalent to the MBE for groups.
It recognises the outstanding contribution that voluntary groups make to local communities and sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering.
Mrs Cunliffe-Lister said: "Voluntary groups across the East Riding of Yorkshire are vital to all aspects of community life, especially as times are becoming more trying.
"The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service has proved an important way of bringing recognition to groups who have dedicated themselves, in some cases over many years, to improving local people's lives. If you know a group in your area, get out there and nominate!"
Since its creation in 2002 to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee, more than 600 groups around the UK have won the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
