Peter Wallwork Naylor of Beverley gave a marvellous insight into how he came to design the memorial, giving details of his research and how the memorial was eventually made by a small family company in Hull, W Campbell & Son Ltd.

The talk gave us a poignant reminder of how young and brave these men from the 158 Squadron were, flying seven to a plane on most nights from 1943 to 1945 – many of them never to return.

The memorial lists the names of all those from the squadron who died – 850 men and one woman.

They were from the Commonwealth as well as Britain and their average age was just 22.

Mr Naylor talked about the attention to detail which includes a concrete surround to the sculpture, which replicates the runway at Lissett, and the English wildflower meadow grass which was planted around it – especially chosen to replicate the meadows of the 1940s, when the bomber command were operating.

The lecture at Driffield Rugby Club was attended by many members together with a record number of visitors.
