Going back in time
The Masonic Lodge at 25 Lockwood Street in Driffield will be transformed back to its original use as a museum on Friday, August 19 between 4pm and 5.30pm, to house an exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the death of Driffield son, pioneering Victorian archaeologist John Robert Mortimer.
The event is being organised by the Culture and Heritage group, part of the Driffield Partnership, to commemorate and celebrate the life of JR Mortimer who originally built the Masonic Lodge in 1878 as a museum to house his collection of geological specimens and prehistoric artefacts.
Mortimer was a pioneering archaeologist who made a nationally important contribution to the development of modern British archaeology. He devoted much of his adult life to the systematic and careful examination of prehistoric burial mounds and other archaeological features on the Yorkshire Wolds, eventually becoming a nationally recognised authority on the subject.
There will be an exciting chance to find out about modern archaeological techniques such as ‘Geophiz’ (a radar used to see what’s underground) and talk with experts on old and new Yorkshire Wolds archaeology.
To find out more about Mortimer’s Driffield there will be an hour long walk around the town, led by Dr Harrison, starting at 5pm on Friday, August 19, to discover the buildings connected with John Robert Mortimer, a real opportunity to get to grips with an important part of the town’s past.
