Mr John Ullyott Burdass
A funeral service was held at All Saints’ Church, Thwing on Tuesday, January 17 for Mr John Ullyott Burdass, formerly of Dotterill Park, who died in hospital on January 5. He was 80.
The service was conducted by the Rev Carole Aconley, the sermon was given by the Rt Rev Richard Frith, Bishop of Hull and the organist was Lorna Coates.
John was born at Top Farm, Thwing on 5 April, 1931. He had an older sister Mary and younger brother Mike. The family moved to Dotterill Park in 1940, where John lived for most of his life before moving to Kilham in recent years. He was educated at Thwing and St Peter’s, York. His time at Askham Bryan agricultural college was cut short after only three weeks by the untimely death of his father Charles Burdass, OBE. He returned home to run the family farms at Dotterill Park and Thwing. A few years later he was joined by his brother Mike and together they farmed as J & M Burdass, a family business which has now passed down a generation.
John played tennis and cricket for Harpham, but rugby was where he excelled. He was Driffield captain for four seasons from 1955 to 1959 and club president in 1987/8. On hanging up his boots he then served on the Yorkshire rugby committee as East Yorkshire representative for 34 years, being Yorkshire president in 1977/8. He was a great champion of Yorkshire rugby at a time when county rugby was in its prime. He was well -known in Yorkshire rugby circles and was a keen follower of all the East Riding clubs he represented in addition to Driffield.
He served as a church warden at All Saints’, Thwing for 60 years, as did his father and grandfather before him. He was also on the parish council for 33 years. He was a trustee of Lamplugh House, Christian centre, he chaired the Bridlington tax commissioners, serving for some 30 years, and was on the advisory committee to High Mowthorpe Farm. He also served as a governor of St Peter’s School.
He was a man of the country who loved the outdoor life. He enjoyed shooting and was a member of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
He and his wife Mary were married in 1958, celebrating their golden anniversary four years ago. They had three children, Tim, Helen and James and six grandchildren of whom he was very proud Rosie, Mark, Thomas, Hannah, Chloe and Cameron. He will be dearly missed by his family and all that knew him.
