Robert Edwin (Ted) Lyon

A funeral service was held at the East Riding Crematorium on Thursday February 7 for Robert Edwin (Ted) Lyon of Middleton on the Wolds, who died peacefully aged 95 at the Beverley Community hospital on January 28. The service was conducted by the Rev Malcolm Exley.

Ted Lyon was born at Bainton on October 14 1917, the son of William Lyon, a local shepherd and his wife Mary; younger brother to the late Jack Lyon who later became the blacksmith at Bainton, and to a sister Lena who still lives in Driffield.

Ted started work at 14 as a horse boy on a local farm at a wage of £5 per year, paid annually.

Shortly before the war he moved to Leeds to work on building the famous Quarry Hill flats.

In 1940 he married Florence Smithson, daughter of the signalman at Bainton railway station and they had one daughter, Sheila, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In 1947 after living for a short time at Bainton, he settled with his family at Middleton on the Wolds. His wife died in a car accident in 1971.

From 1940 to 1946 he served in the RASC. During the invasion of Normandy he drove a lorry loaded with ammunition onto the landing beach; later campaigning through France, Belgium and Holland. After the war he went back into the building and construction trade finally retiring at 72, and becoming a jobbing gardener.

Ted was a true old fashioned countryman, happiest and most comfortable in his own environment. A naturally skilled and committed flower and vegetable gardener, field sports supporter and DIY enthusiastic, he will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbours.

Mourners were daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Noel Schofield; grandchildren, David, Alastair and Emma; great grandchildren Chloe, Scott, Joe, Jack and Florence; Susan and Charles Williams representing Ted’s sister Lena Bevan; Paul and Carolyn Williams; Connie and Carole Shipley; Lesley and Philip Smith; Heather Swallow; Thomas Smith; Philip Ellis; Chris and Sheila Clubley; Viv Sedman; Muriel and Maurice Sharp; Alec Sellars; Sandra Blackburn; Tina Walker representing Lynn Walker; Lynn Hodgson; June and John Lea; Ken and Edith Harland.
