Safety event targets cyclists and drivers

Young cyclists and drivers aged over 15 are being invited to a road safety awareness evening at Driffield Fire Station on Tuesday, November 23 from 6.30pm to 9pm.

Youth workers from the East Riding Council are working with a range of other services and organisations to raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of being a driver, passenger and cyclist in and around Driffield.

There will be opportunities for young people age 15 and over to ride in Humberside Fire and Rescue Service’s “iCar” which simulates a real road traffic incident, watch the fire officers drill for recovering a casualty from a crashed car, and carry out some basic hand to eye activities while wearing beer goggles.

Organisations supporting this event are:

l Humberside Fire and Rescue Driffield officers and road safety team who will deliver a hard hitting presentation, operate the iCar and demonstrate a rescue from a crashed car

l Tesco Driffield who will be providing refreshments,

l PCSOs who will be offering cycle coding and identification.

l Humberside Police road traffic officers, who will explain their role after a fatality and allow young people to see the technology they carry in traffic cars.

l Take One Moment Foundation where local woman Mrs Atkinson will talk to young people about her family’s personal experience.

Jackie Brewis, youth service manager said: “Youth workers are well placed to engage these young people from their work on the streets and the youth centre in Driffield.

“We are delighted to be organising this in BRAKE Week and work with partners who have specialist knowledge, experience and resources to make this an interactive learning opportunity for young people whether it is keeping safe on their cycles, who they are happy to accept a lift from or learning about their own driving.”
