STAFF and pupils at Northfield Infant School in Driffield have had a great start to 2012 after winning £1,000 in a Driffield Times & Post competition.
The school has won the top prize of £1,000 in The Driffield Times & Post Cash For Schools Competition in association with Barclays Moneyskills. Pupils collected a grand total of £51,790 worth of Barclays Moneyskills banknotes; £488.58 worth of banknotes per pupil.
James Page, bank manager at Barclays’ Driffield Branch presented a cheque to Northfield’s six school council representatives, Liam, Tabitha, Lily, Kieran, Jessica and Will along with Barclays’ cashier, Kelly Stonehouse, who attended Northfield Infant School.
Staff and pupils at the school are thrilled to have won £1,000 and the decision on what the prize money will be spent on was based on what the children would like to see more of in the school.
The money will be spent on resources for the school’s provisional areas of learning which include a role play area, art area and writing area.
Mrs Wilson, headteacher at Northfield School said: “The class council had a meeting with their classes and the children would like resources for our provisional areas of learning.”
James Page was pleased with the outcome of the competition and the financial values the competition emphasised in all the schools that took part, he said: “I am pleased that the money has gone into the local community of Driffield.
“The competition has been a great way to enhance money skills in schools. As it’s not on the national curriculum, it gives children an idea of how to manage money when they leave school.
“I am very passionate about providing money skills to all areas of the community. At Barclays we are very passionate about promoting financial inclusion, this involves teaching money schools to a range of people including school pupils, school leavers, those who have come out of young offenders institutions and those with a disability, to name a few.”
Kelly Stonehouse, a cashier at Barclays’ Driffield Branch attended Northfield Infants as a youngster and is thrilled to see her former school win the competition.
Kelly said: “It’s really great to see it go to a local school.
“It’s a good cause and I’m sure they will use it wisely.”
