RESIDENTS of Thixendale are set to be taken back to Roman times with a re-enactment event next weekend in aid of three village organisations.
The Comitatus re-enactment group will be staging the event at the village’s cricket ground next Saturday and Sunday, August 9 and 10, from 11am to 4pm each day.
Proceeds from the event will be shared between the village hall, the cricket club and
church funds.
Comitatus are one of the largest Roman re-enactment societies in the country who specialise in the later period of the Empire.
And visitors to Thixendale will be able to gain an insight into what life was like for Roman soldiers and their families through a range of different sights, sounds, smells and tastes from the period.
The weekend will include demonstrations, training in marching, fighting and the weaponry of the period, plus interactive sessions for children.
There will be demonstrations of traditional crafts and skills, as well as stalls including a tombola, bric-a-brac, crafts and books.
A bouncy castle will also be on hand to entertain the youngsters and refreshments will be available.
Admission is priced at £3 for adults, £2 concessions and £1 for children. Under fives are allowed in free. Parking will be available on Burdale Road.
