RUSSIA'S leading orchestra, the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, is to play a concert in Hull.

Founded in 1936, the orchestra will be presenting a variety of music from the Romantic period and the 20th century, from Russian composers Mussorgsky, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov.

The performance will feature acclaimed violin soloist Sergei Girshenko. Sergei is widely known as Russia's First Violin and before joining the Russian State Symphony Orchestra was with the Bolshoi Theatre and St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestras.

Recently he was given the honorary title of People's Artist of Russia and has taught violin at the Moscow Conservatory for the last 17 years.

Tickets for The Russian State Symphony Orchestra, at the Hull City Hall on Tuesday May 20, are priced from £18.50 and are available on (01482) 226655.
