With some liquid feeds in short supply due to the cold weather, and concerns that forage stocks could run short if the winter is long, then livestock farmers should look to molasses-based liquids such as Regupro or Regumaize as alternative sugar energy and protein sources and/or forage extenders, says ED&F Man's Jim Howie.
Mr Howie explains: "Molasses-based Regumaize has 44% crude protein and 55% sugars in the dry matter. At around £175/t delivered it provides protein at cost-effective rates and is one of the lowest cost sugar options available.

"Another liquid opt
ion is Regupro, which has a crude protein of 38% and sugar content of 30% in the dry matter, and is around £155/tonne."

To stretch out forage supplies, farmers can upgrade the nutritional value of straw by adding the protein-enriched molasses liquid Regumaize," adds Mr Howie. "A mix of 1.9kg of straw and 1kg of Regumaize delivers roughly the same energy and protein as 10kg of grass silage.

"Similarly, if silage quality is poorer than ideal, then adding Regumix raises the nutritional value closer by adding cost-effective protein and providing an extra source of readily digestible energy which will enhance DM intakes."

For more information on a comprehensive range of molasses-based liquid feeds and the Company's offer of a free trial of a storage tank, farmers should contact ED& F Man on 0151 944 3900 or visit the website: www.edfmanliquidproductsuk.com.
