Delighted to be back together after the floods
RESIDENTS of a Beverley home for the elderly are celebrating the official re-opening of their Abbeyfield UK house, which was devastated by last summer's floods.
Staff, supporters and volunteers of Abbeyfield UK have spent months working hard to restore the home in Langholm Close to its former glory.
The residents, and their belongings which were saved by volunteers, moved back into the supported sheltered house in December.
This week Beverley's Deputy Mayor, Coun Ken Thorley, joined the residents, staff and contractors for the official re-opening ceremony.
When the floods hit the region last June, the ground floor of the house and its outbuildings were hit by a foot of water. The building suffered water damage up to door handle level and the 14 residents, including one aged 102, were moved to safety.
About half the residents went to stay with relatives while repair work was carried out, and others were accommodated in other Abbeyfield UK homes.
Local service manager Joanne Langthorp said: "For six months staff worked closely with contractors to ensure that the house is restored to its former glory. Along the way we have received tremendous support from local people in Beverley, from volunteers, contractors and residents' families.
"We are delighted to be back together. The flood really brought the best out of people and showed the true fighting spirit of Abbeyfield and our residents."
