HAVING witnessed a demonstration outside County Hall criticising obscene salary increases to a small number of ERYC managers, I asked if the relatively low-paid employees such as library staff, catering staff would receive the same increase.

The council replied 'Not really, we only have £190,000 spare and this must go to the top dogs'.

But I argued the Chief Clerk (sorry, Chief Executive) already earns £3,000 per week plus expenses, surely in these austere times that is sufficient.

Why give him another £180 per week when the Bank of England forecasts inflation to be around zero next year?

The total salary would equate to one state pension per working hour.
Silence reigned (and we all get wet).

So, next time you are scraping together the Thatcherite Council Tax, just think it is going to a good cause.

May I suggest that instead of Pudsey the Bear and Children in Need we could have an executives in Need evening with Stephen the Bear and the Tory councillors.

A case surely of 'you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours'.
