I am writing to express my shock and dismay at seeing the desecration of the river bank at Little Driffield.
I could not believe my eyes as I biked along Mucky Duck Lane between Kelleythorpe and Little Driffield on Tuesday evening (August 19), when I witnessed the felling of large healthy willow trees on the banks of the stream that runs under the road alon
g there.
Many trees were being felled and their branches burnt on a huge bonfire which was still burning on Wednesday evening.
The trunks were stacked and numbered, obviously being sold on for some purpose. I dread to think what a devastating effect this must have had on the wildlife. From the bridge it has in the past been possible to see kingfishers, water voles, water rats, and various wildfowl along with many other small birds.
The habitat of these creatures has been badly damaged and the view from the bridge has been spoilt. Whoever was responsible chose their moment.
Too late to ring the council and have the process halted, and too late to register an immediate protest through the pages of the Driffield Times.
Shame on you, whoever you are.
I hope you face prosecution for what appears to many to be an act of environmental vandalism.
