John Forrester, Secretary of Driffield branch Royal British Legion writes...
Due to circumstances outside my control I was unable to submit a report to the Driffield Times or Post about the Service of Remembrance on Sunday, November 9 or the Armistice Service on Tuesday, November 11 giving details of the events.
The Serv
ice of Remembrance was held in a packed All Saints' Church. The service was conducted by the clergy of Driffield Churches Together in front of guests from Lord Lieutenants' Office, Driffield Town Council, soldiers and airmen from the armed services, members from the various welfare, voluntary and youth organisations in Driffield.
Lessons were read by Brig' Alan Simmons and Driffield School student Grace Conyers.
After the service the Act of Remembrance was observed at the War Memorial in the church grounds. Fifteen-year-old Toby Woodall sounded the Last Post and Reveille on the bugle after the two minutes silence 28 wreaths were laid by all organisations attending. Light refreshments were then served by the WRVS in the Methodist Church rooms.
The Armistice Service was held at the Garden of Remembrance, commencing at 10.55am. The service was conducted by Rev Malcolm Exley.
The Two minutes silence was observed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the World War 1.
A wreath was then laid by Councillor Tony Cooper, Mayor of Driffield on behalf of the residents of Driffield. A large number of crosses were then laid by people making their own silent tribute to friends and family.
The Driffield branch of the Royal Brigtish Legion would like to thank everyone in Driffield and surrounding area for their support during Poppy Appeal time. A breakdown of the collection will be published in a few weeks' time when all donations have been counted.
