We were sorry to find out about the auctioning of the early 19th C truncheon too late to bid for it ,but very interested to learn about it.
Thomas Scruton is my husband David Scruton's great great great grandfather.

Thomas was born in Beverley in 1781 and died in Watton in 1836.
He and his wife, Ellen Ruston, of Hutton Cranswick, had 12 children and lived at Winniforth Farm, Watton.

The Scruton family moved between Beverley and Driffield for a great many years.

Thomas's grandfather, Robert Scruton, was born in 1727 in Kirkburn and died in Watton in 1812.

He was apprenticed at the age of eight to Daniel Habersham, a bleacher in Beverley.

Robert married the boss's daughter, Mary, and became a yeoman farmer at Leconfield.

Mary's cousin, James Habersham, meanwhile, founded an orphanage in Georgia, America, eventually becoming governor of Georgia. His son became Postmaster General of the USA.

It's good to know that Thomas Scruton did his 'bit' for the local community by becoming a constable.

His descendant, Geoffrey Scruton, was Mayor of Beverley in the 1950s while Geoffrey's son, David, has served on the Community Council here in Wales.

Ann Scruton, of Hafan Deg, Maeshafn, Mold, N Wales
