HUNDREDS of young farmers descended on Manor Farm, Laxton, over the weekend to compete in the East Riding YFC annual county rally with Brandesburton YFC coming out on top.
More than 500 members of clubs from the East Riding of Yorkshire Federation of YFC, along with family and friends, attended the event which is the highlight of the YFC calendar.

Young farmers battled it out in more than 75 different competitions, but it was Brandesburton and District YFC who lifted the much coveted Lady Katherine Phillips Trophy for most points won on the day.

Classes ran throughout the day, including flower arranging, fish filleting and live craft demonstrations, and were accompanied by a series of fun competitions such as yard of ale, cream cracker eating and gift wrapping.

Rally committee chairman, Sam Benson, of Howden YFC, praised the efforts of the teams taking part.

"The statics shed was buzzing from 8am with members displaying their hard work showing skills in cookery, crafts and other creations," he said.

Thorngumbald YFC were the rally runners-up and a further eight trophies went to Brandesburton and their members for individual and team achievements.

Bridlington and District YFC picked up the trophy for clubs with under 23 members and Bainton and District YFC took the cup for clubs with under 28 members.

East Riding YFC county chairman, Liz Vickerton, said: "Everyone who takes part is a winner. Not everyone goes home with a certificate or trophy but by taking part they gain experience and it is amazing how you see members grow in confidence every time they take part in the rally."

Many of the day's winners will now be invited to represent their club and county at the northern area field day on Saturday June 14 at Brandesburton when the East Riding YFC will welcome members from across the North of England to compete in the finals.
