Unique digital cinema experience
AN INTERNATIONAL scheme broadcasting the best of British Theatre live by satellite to selected cinemas around the world has arrived in the region.
The Galtres Centre, Easingwold is now part of National Theatre Live and will present a screening of Fela at 7.30pm tomorrow night (January 13).
The move follows the announcement that the venue had been selected to share in £400,000 of Lottery funding granted by the UK Film Council to a new consortium led by Screen Yorkshire with the aim of bringing the latest in digital cinema to venues across rural North Yorkshire.
First staged in New York Fela is a wholly unique hybrid of dance, theatre and music exploring the world of Afro beat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Using his pioneering musical blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies Fela reveals Kuti’s life as an artist and political activist.
Kuti was musically educated in England and then radicalised by the black power movement in America before returning to Nigeria to take on the Generals.
Paul McCartney described Kuti’s band as the best he’d ever seen and there is no doubt the show offers a dazzling eye full with spectacular designs by Marina Draghici.
Fela is a blockbuster musical, gloriously staged with spectacular costumes and lighting and won three Tony awards in 2010 including best choreography- just the antidote to the cold dull days of January.
