TOP singer-songwriter Benny Gallagher will make a return visit to The Processed Pea music venue at the Light Dragoon at Etton on Tuesday November 4, at 8.30pm.

One half of the hit makers Gallagher and Lyle, Benny began his career as a staff writer with the encouragement of Paul McCartney at Beatles Music Publishing Company Apple, writing songs for Mary Hopkin.

Following the success of his band McGuines
s Flint, who topped the charts in the early seventies with When I'm Dead and Gone, Benny and fellow Scotsman Graham Lyle formed the distinctive duo Gallagher and Lyle that really made them a household name.

Their album Breakaway was a worldwide smash with the title track being taken into the charts by Art Garfunkel.

Gallagher's songs have also been covered by the likes of Bryan Ferry, Phil Everly, Ringo Starr, Simon and Garfunkel and Status Quo.

When McCartney set up the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, he offered the post of head of music to Benny, an offer that had to be declined due to other commitments.

In his rare solo performances he includes classic hits such as When I'm Dead and Gone, Breakaway, Heart on My Sleeves and I Wanna Stay With You.

The latter song was recently sampled by the band Lemonjelly on their bestselling release.

Organiser Martin Peirson said: "Benny's a real craftsman, many of his songs have subtle chord changes in them that most songwriters don't think of, and he's got some great stories to tell too."

Benny also enjoys performing in this area. On his last visit to Etton he commented; "There are not enough places like the Processed Pea. The people here are so friendly."

Tickets (£10) are available in advance from Beverley Tourist Information Centre and Costcutter at Cherry Burton.
