THE cliff top at Sewerby will step back in time to 400AD in a Roman re-enactment.
This Bank Holiday weekend Sewerby Hall and Gardens will host the event which could attract up to 5,000 people.

The Comitatus Group will demonstrate the skills of the Roman cavalry and legionnaires and how weapons were used during the Roman times.

Displays of roman cavalry archers will feature riders firing bows from the saddle of moving horses, which are trained to be ridden in the Roman manner near Howden.

Sewerby's Customer Services Officer, Graeme Harvey, said: "This event fits in perfectly with the site, especially as the original Roman Fortress of Praesidium lies in a watery grave off Sewerby, lost to coastal erosion.

"I am sure all our visitors will enjoy watching demonstrations of the skills of the Roman cavalry and legionnaires and also learning about the weapons used during that period. This event is particularly well received as there is the opportunity for children to get physically involved as well."

Infantry displays will be held at 11am and 2pm on Sunday August 24 while the cavalry will be on show at 12noon and 3pm.

As well as the Roman re-enactment there is also the East Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Rally on the Sunday only.

More than 200 classic cars are expected to adorn the back field display area along with Frankie Dean's Mississippi Dixilanders who will provide the musical entertainment for the afternoon.

Admission to Sewerby Hall and Gardens is £4 for adults, tel (01262) 673769 for details.
