OLYMPIC swimmer Sharron Davies paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of students at Bishop Burton College's Further Education presentation ceremony.
Sharron, who became an Olympic athlete at the age of 13, was invited to the college to present students with certificates and prizes.

During her visit, she told students and visitors about her career both in the water and out, where she has carved out a successful career as a TV presenter, most notably for The Big Breakfast and as one of The Gladiators.

She told the learners: "My advice to you is to work hard as luck is created when hard work meets opportunity and if you work hard enough you can often make your own luck.

"The best piece of information I can give you, however, is that although you may not know what you want to do, when opportunities arise take them and even if it's not for you, if you learn then it's not been a wasted exercise."

College principal Jeanette Dawson said Sharron was invited to meet students as she was such a powerful force behind the UK's bid to host the 2012 Olympics. The college has just been approved as an equestrian training base for the games.

National Diploma student Gemma Bridges was presented with the Dennis Hurst Memorial Prize for the Premier FE Student.
