A COMPETITION win has turned into a bitter-sweet victory for children at Kilham Primary School.
The nine members of the school’s Computer Club For Girls won a trip to the Houses of Parliament, but only six are allowed to go.

Kate Nellar, the higher level teaching assistant who supervised the group’s entry into the Make IT Happen competition, said those being left out were disappointed.

“They have limited the numbers, but it’s unfortunate there were nine in the group,” she said. “We pulled names out of a hat. They have been very good about it and we gave them a commiseration prize.”

Disappointment aside, Kate said the team, who will travel to the capital on October 14, were thrilled to have come out top in the Yorkshire and Humber region, earning £1,000 for the school.

Judges were impressed by the girls’ project which included a PowerPoint presentation dealing with the community issue of dog fouling.

Their work also saw them meet the village’s dog warden and take to the street with a stencil and spray paint to warn dog owners to clean up after their pets.

Kate said: “It will be an experience.

“They would never otherwise have the opportunity to meet the people they are going to meet and have a trip round the Houses of Parliament. I am very excited - we never expected to win - and the girls are ecstatic. Some of the girls will not have been to London before so travelling down on the train will be an experience for them.”

Kilham’s Computer Club For Girls will now go head-to-head with the 11 other regional winners for the top prize of £4,500.

The overall winner will be announced at the awards ceremony in the House of Commons on October 14.

Prizes will be presented by the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls. The pupils from Kilham will also have the chance to meet the MP for Driffield, Greg Knight.
