A VILLAGE sports club suffered a double blow when it was struck by suspected arsonists and thieves in one weekend.
Wetwang Bowls Club pavilion was damaged by fire last weekend and important club equipment has also gone missing.

The club is appealing for the return of 20 bowling green markers, numbered from one to four, so they can host visiting teams.

It is thought the markers, which are worth around £200, were taken by offenders who also set light to the club's pavilion.

Secretary of Wetwang Bowls Club, David Lunn, is appealing for the markers, 10 of which are made of metal and 10 from wood and plastic, to be returned.

He said: "They stole the numbers from around the bowling green. They are awkward things to carry and of no use to anybody else."

Only a small amount of damage has been caused by the perpetrators, leading members of the bowls club, which was founded around 50 years ago, to believe the vandalism was not malicious.

A carpet was burned, a sign was pulled from above the door, a small amount of smoke damage was caused and an attempt was made to force open the door of a hut.

The incidents occurred between 10.30pm on Thursday and 1pm on Saturday.
Anyone with information should contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060222 quoting reference number 1581194.
