A TEENAGE boy has been cautioned by police after damage that will cost more than £1,000 to repair was caused at a village church.
Villagers in Wansford were shocked after two rare 19th century stained glass windows in the chancel and nave of the of St Mary’s Church on Saturday July 5.
Churchwarden Brian Fairfield said he was disappointed that the culprit was a youngster but he is now hopeful there will not be a repeat of the incident.
Mr Fairfield said: “We are all rather disappointed and all we can say is we hope there’s not a re-occurence and that he is aware of the distress that he has caused.”
At the time of the incident Mr Fairfield told the Driffield Times that he was sure that the damage would sadden and dismay the local community.
Less than two months on the windows are still awaiting the repair work needed to restore them to their former glory and it looks likely to be a lengthy process.
Mr Fairfield added: “It will probably be about another three months before all the paper work is in place. The main window is still boarded up - we are waiting for the insurance company. When that’s done we have to submit all the paperwork down to York because it is a listed building and architects have to make sure that what we are doing is in keeping with the church.”
