The £7m facility, which has been under construction for the past year, is on target to open its doors to the public next month.

The sports-mad will be well-catered for whether they are looking for an aerobics or spinning session or to play a game of five-a-side football with friends.

It is hoped the opening of the centre will also spark a renewed interest in keeping fit among Driffield residents who do not currently visit the existing leisure centre.

P'Nina Drye, leisure centre project manager for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "It is a really smart facility for Driffield and will hopefully get people back into sport," she said.

"I think the community will be amazed and get an awful lot of use out of it. It should be a real treat and encourage people to bring their children and make use of the facilities."

Larger than the current leisure centre, this one is also expected to create several new jobs for which manager Kevin Dunning is currently interviewing candidates, said P'Nina.

According to Paul Waddoups, the project manager for Wates Construction, the Leeds-based firm which has built the centre, its design is based on boxes with colours used to mark the inside and outside of each space.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council which will run the sports centre has worked with a group for the disabled to ensure the facilities are accessible to all.

"It will be accessible to everyone in a wheelchair," said P'Nina.

"They are currently interviewing for jobs here and we are on target timewise.

"It will be interesting when people come in for the first time."
