DRIFFIELD'S long awaited new sports centre is set to open before the end of the summer.
Work has been progressing steadily and the town's three East Riding of Yorkshire councillors have been given a glimpse into the new facilities.
Symon Fraser, Barbara Hall and Felicity Temple were given a guided tour of the rapidly developing project
on Bridlington Road.

The building, which houses a brand new main swimming pool, a learner pool, a multi-functional gymnasium, a general purpose-meeting room and a brand new sports hall has been taking shape since the turf cutting ceremony a year ago.

Driffield sportsmen and women are already signing up for membership of the new facility.

The fitness suite will be one of the best in the area boasting more than 45 different pieces of equipment - offering Driffield a multitude of keep-fit options.

Coun Hall said: "The contractors took us round the new facility showing us how all the different features are accommodated. Although the area is still a very active building site it was excellent to see how it is all taking shape."

Coun Temple remarked: "The site is impressive and I was pleased to see some of the advanced materials and technologies which are being incorporated into the construction.

"The facility is going to be a massive asset for Driffield's keep-fit fanatics and will, of course, provide a great facility for the school children as well."

Coun Fraser added: "The project is progressing well, but much still remains to be completed. We are expecting the centre to be opened later in the summer.

"It was absolutely fascinating to see how some of the building work is done and to see some of the incredible modern materials used in the construction.

"I am looking forward to seeing how the centre's ultra-modern heating system works. It is designed to enable energy to be re-used thus saving on fuel usage."
