CAMPAIGNERS behind plans to relocate a war memorial to the servicemen and women of Driffield who gave their lives in the Second World War have urged townspeople to back their final fundraising push, starting this weekend.
A fundraising concert by the Bridlington Classic Pop Singers will be held at the town's Community Centre tomorrow night, Saturday.

And campaign officials hope a good turnout will see them reach the total they need to complete the work.

Town councillor Steve Poessl said the effort is between £500 and £1000 short of the original £5,000 target set when the campaign was launched earlier this year.

He said they were also hoping to secure sufficient funds to provide for a surplus to meet any extra costs, but added: "We're very, very close."

As first reported in the Driffield Post in February, the town council are working with the Friends of North End Park and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to relocate a brass plaque, which is currently sited in the Remembrance shelter, to a specially designed memorial built from Yorkshire stone.

Coun Poessl said the stone has now been ordered for the memorial, while the plaque itself will also be cleaned.

Tickets for Saturday's concert are still available from the town council offices, Coun Poessl and Friends of Northend Park chairman John Forrester. Guests will also be able to pay on the door. Admission is £5
And Coun Poessl urged as many people as possible to turn out and support the cause.

"Please, please support it. It's an important thing for the veterans who are here and for their colleagues who gave their lives for us", he said.

He also thanked the Driffield Post and all the other individuals and organisations who have supported the campaign.
