A small group of enthusiasts are gathering together on Friday evening to explore the possibilities of forming a society with the initial principal objective of re-opening part of one of the closed railway lines across the Yorkshire Wolds.
To help
make the dream a reality, the organisers are appealing for interested individuals from within the local community to attend an inaugural meeting to officially launch the scheme.
If you are a former railwayman or just like the idea of being involved in steam engines, signalling, track laying, administration, catering or organising then you will be made particularly welcome. The scope for volunteer effort is enormous, even if you can only offer occasional assistance, then please attend the first meeting and lend your support to this very worthwhile project. You are needed.
The formation of a society to provide focus for the idea will be the first real step forward, drawing together people who are prepared to progress the scheme.
Although re-opening part of the chosen railway line will commence on a small scale, there remains huge potential for further development and expansion of the line and associated facilities.
There have been many suggestions and ideas on which section of closed railway line would prove most appropriate and attractive for re-development, final decisions on these matters await the formation of an official body to move the scheme forward in association with local landowners and Public Authorities.
Just imagine a J27 class 0-6-0 puffing its way gently down a pretty Wolds railway line complete with carriages taking people to local attractions in the area. The visual effect would be timeless and reminiscent of the line as it was from the 1930's onwards until closure. Adding another scenic attraction to our pretty Wolds landscape would generate and focus enormous economic benefits for the whole of the Yorkshire Wolds area.
A spokesperson said: “We may be commencing in a small way but the inventiveness of your own imagination is the only limit imposed.
“Be a part of the dream and help turn it into reality.”
The meeting takes place on Friday at The Old Lodge, Malton, 7pm.
