A serious environmental disaster was averted after 3,500 litres of liquid fertiliser was spilled onto a Driffield Road.

The fertiliser spilled from a trailer which overturned while being pulled by a
tractor near a roundabout on the Driffield by-pass on Sunday afternoon at around 3.30pm.

The chemical flowed into storm drain, and fears that it could pollute a nearby watercourse known as West Beck prompted a multi-agency response which included the police, fire service, the council and the Environment Agency.
