‘Protect the Wolds’ plea

CAMPAIGNERS are fighting plans to install two wind turbines near the entrance to a village amid fears they will harm the Wolds landscape which inspired artist David Hockney.

A total of 185 signatures have been collected by a group of residents in Lockington who have objected to the plans by Dalton Estate for two 34.2m high turbines to be erected at Rectory Farm, Station Road.

And 44 letters of objection have been sent to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council ahead of the plan, which have been recommended for approval, being discussed by planners next week.

Kevin Marshal, who is one of a group of residents who took the petition door to door, said the main concern was not about wind turbines as such but the chosen site.

“The residents consider that the size and location of the proposed 34.5m high turbines to be inappropriate and harmful to the conservation village and out of keeping with the precious Wolds Landscape - as depicted in the currently acclaimed David Hockney exhibition,” Mr Marshal said.

And with over 90 wind turbine applications sent to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council within the last year the campaigners have called on the Authority to take into account the cumulative impact of turbines on the local landscape.

“It is considered that a fairer and more co-ordinated plan for the siting of wind turbines should be established to prevent this predominately rural landscape becoming a low density wind farm by stealth,” Mr Marshal added.

In a report submitted to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Dalton Estate say that the proposed turbines would provide renewable energy for the farm and may generate up to 312, 000kWh, reduce CO2 emissions, helping to contribute towards regional and national renewable energy targets.

“It is considered that the proposals will not significantly detract from the character and appearance of the Conservation Area, the visual character and appearance of the landscape or the natural environment.

“It is considered that the relatively moderate height of the turbines, the tree/woodland screening and the long separation distances, also play an important part in reducing the potential impact of the turbines,” the report concludes.

The plans will be considered by the Eastern Area Planning Sub-Committee at County Hall, Beverley on Monday February 6.
