Call to retain the hunting ban - Your views on the news

Sadly, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day are seen as traditional times when hunters and shooters like to indulge in appallings act of animal cruelty.

It beggers belief that some people actually want to go out and savagely kill defenceless animals for fun.

The Hunting Act of 2004 made hunting with hounds illegal and indeed there have been numerous successful prosecutions against those, who arrogantly seek to defy the ban on hunting, thus demonstrating that the Act is working. Contrary to the headline in the Driffield Times “Crowds turn out to greet the hounds”, that might suggest that hunting is still popular, support is rapidly dwindling.

It was disappointing that the Driffield Times should show support for those, who hunt, by publishing photographs of the Boxing Day meeting and go on to report that members of the Middleton Hunt were unable to take to the fields because the weather might prove a hazard for mounts and riders. You obviosly do not care about the hazards to wildlife due to those participating in an illegal activity.

Anyone, who considers that the Hunting Act should be repealed is flying in the face of democracy as 80% of the population wish to retain the legislation banning hunting and thereby confine cruelty in the countryside to history.
