A DESPERATE plea has gone out on behalf of a Wolds village which stands to see their historically significant Church fall into disrepair unless they can find £30,000.

This is part of an overall repair bill of almost £150,000 needed to save the roof at St Andrew’s Church, in Bainton.

Last year temporary works were carried out on the roof of the Grade I listed building which dates back to the 14th century, to stop water getting in but a more detailed inspection has revealed that major repairs are needed which will cost around £146,000.

Of this around £20,000 VAT will be recoverable with Bainton resident Cathy Otton-Goulder, who has helped raise vital funds for other stricken churches on the Wolds, having successfully applied to English Heritage for a £25,000 grant.

And with the St Andrew’s Church capital and trust balances amounting to around £82,000 - from fund-raising, money bequeathed to the church from parishioners that have died, and donations - that leaves a shortfall of about £19,000.

“We are working on the assumption that we will need to raise about £30,000 to do the repairs and run the church,” said Church treasurer Liz Dewsbury.

“Cathy who is very experienced in grant applications for major church building projects, thinks that further grant funding can be applied for but almost certainly we will need to raise some of the shortfall ourselves.”

“It’s a wonderful Church but it’s such a small congregation,” Liz added.

To help get the fund-raising ball rolling the Woldsburn Benefice Choir will give a concert at St Andrew’s Church on Good Friday, April 6 from 7.30pm.

The choir will perform with soprano Janet Bates under the direction of Lesley Burtenshaw.

Anyone able to help should contact Liz Dewsbury on (01377) 217592 or email e.f.dewsbury.t21@btinternet.com
