Hull law firm James Legal has seen a rise in the number of enquiries to its family law team despite the recent cuts to Legal Aid.

On 1 April 2013 the Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act came into force effectively ending Legal Aid in respect of divorce and disputes concerning money or children.

Sarah Wasling of James Legal’s family department says “This has left many people worried about how much it will cost to take legal action to resolve family issues.”

Many traditional solicitors charge strictly by the minute for each phone call, letter or email that you send to them and then again for each reply they send you. This can result in a nasty shock when you receive a hefty bill at the end of the proceedings.

Sarah says that this is where James Legal’s unique approach comes in. “While we don’t offer legal aid, more and more people are coming to us because we offer free initial advice, fixed prices and flexible payments.”

“The free advice we give to start off with is a godsend for many. It at least gets people who need our help in the door. From there we make the whole issue of legal costs transparent and because we agree how much people can pay, and when they can pay it, it becomes easier for them to manage and takes out all the added stress. Yes, we are a business, but we’re doing what we can to balance the scales and ensure that everyone can access legal advice.”

“Of course, that’s great for our clients, but what about those who are still relying on an old fashioned legal advice system where there is no alternative thinking? Sadly many people are giving up on the process altogether because they feel they simply can’t afford a solicitor. ”
