A1 in North Yorkshire to close overnight for bridge demolition

A1 closure from 6pm on Saturday 4th September to 12.30pm on Sunday 5th September

The A1 between Dishforth and Leeming in North Yorkshire will be closed overnight in both directions from 6pm on Saturday 4 September for the demolition of Leases Bridge, as part of the motorway upgrade scheme between Dishforth and Leeming.

The bridge near Leeming Bar will be demolished between 6pm on Saturday 4 September and 12.30pm on Sunday 5 September. During these times the A1 will be fully closed and clearly signed diversion routes will be in place.

For long-distance traffic:

* Long-distance southbound traffic will leave the A1(M) at Junction 60, near Darlington, and use the A689, A19 and A168 before rejoining the A1(M) at Junction 49 (Dishforth).

* Long-distance northbound traffic will leave the A1(M) at Junction 49 (Dishforth) and follow the A168, A19 and A689 before rejoining at A1(M) Junction 60, northbound.

Project manager David Brindle said: "We need to close the A1 so we can safely demolish Leases Bridge. This demolition will mark a significant stage in the upgrade project, as once completed we will be able to start work to widen the carriageway underneath.

"We are carrying out the work overnight and at the weekend when traffic flows are lower and it means we can keep any disruption to road users to a minimum.

"We are advising road users to note the closure times and if they need to use the A1 or the diversion routes during the planned closure to allow extra time for their journeys. For long-distance traffic, the diversion route should add around 12 minutes to their journey."

Road users will be able to plan their journeys using an interactive map on the Highways Agency website, at www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/24058.aspx, and up to date traffic information will be available online at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic, through the Traffic Radio digital service, or on 0300
