ACOUSTIC guitar virtuoso Jon Gomm heading to the seaside

ACOUSTIC guitar virtuoso Jon Gomm is heading for the seaside this weekend as part of his UK tour.

For the second Acoustic Lounge event of the season so far Leeds based headliner Jon Gomm will perform at the Victoria Hotel, on Westborough, Scarborough on Sunday October 25 with support from Rachel Kraft and Ross Dransfield.

Event organiser Steve Dickinson said: "The first Acoustic Lounge with Edwina Hayes went so well & was a sell out on the night, we have decided to press ahead with more events at this fantastic venue, it works perfectly, with a balanced sound and a clear view of the artists we hope to go every couple of months in the new year."

Jon is an acoustic singer-songwriter with an incredible virtuoso guitar style, where he uses one acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and sparkling melodies all at the same time.

The emphasis is still on the soulful vocals and songwriting however, and his original material is influenced by everything from Robert Johnson to Radiohead.

He first laid his hands on a guitar, or rather a ukulele, at the age of two, started taking classical guitar lessons, wrote his first song at the age of six, and at the age of 12 he was accompanying his music critic father to blues gigs in his hometown of Blackpool.

Once he got hold of an electric guitar Jon began emulating Clapton and Hendrix and his teenage years were spent practicing the skills of the rock guitar hero - playing very fast and very loud.

On leaving school Jon turned down a place at Oxford University studying English to attend The Guitar Institute in London where he paid his way through college playing jazz in caf-bars, recording as a session guitarist, and playing Country and Western in working mens clubs for line-dancers.

He went on to study a jazz degree course at Leeds College of Music and has secured some high-profile gigs supporting some of the most-respected names on the acoustic circuit such as Tommy Emmanuel, Nick Harper and Bob Brozman.

Doors to the Victoria Hotel gig open at 7.30pm, tickets cost 5 in advance available from Mojo's, on Northway, Scarborough.
