Ancient church's restoration work goes on YouTube
SUPPORTERS of a village church have taken part in a video campaign championing the community importance of the church.
St Andrew’s Church in Foston-on-the-Wolds can be seen worldwide after supporters of its restoration appeal posted a video on internet site YouTube.
Among the interviewees featured in the video is the rector of the church, the rev James Grainger-Smith, who said it was important to explain why the eighth century church was deserving of the costly restoration.
It is estimated the restoration of the church tower will cost about 200,000.
He said: “In rural areas church buildings become more and more important in times of economic crisis. In Foston-on-the-Wolds the post office closed some time ago and the pub closed in the summer. It tends to be churches that are the last public buildings to leave the area.”
The six minute video was recently shot by Michael Nagasaka, a professional film-maker from Hornsea, and shows the repairs being carried out on the stone work, along with an interview with the chairman of the church fund raising committee, Patrick Farnsworth, and others.
Villagers have campaigned for years to raise funds to restore the tower and now work is under way after a grant for 170,000 from English Heritage.
Mr Grainger-Smith said the cost of the work would total about 200,000 but that they have pressed on with the much-needed reparations with a view to raising the rest in the future. He thanked the committed villagers who have supported the church.
He said: “We pressed ahead and now there’s scaffolding around the tower - the film shows the work going on. New stone has replaced the crumbling stone and we are hoping it will be finished before Easter,” he said.
“The community has been marvellous. They have been absolutely fantastic by raising more than 25,000 and they are still organising events to raise more. I could not have asked for more.”
