Driffield author Mike Wynn is publishing again - this time it is a book about the railways of Britain in the 1960s entitled Steaming Along.
Mike has an extensive collection of colour slides and black and white photographs, mostly of British Railways steam locomotives and trains but also of early diesel locomotives and trains.
The colour slides were all taken between early 1963 and 1967, the black and white between 1958 and 1967, none of which have been published before.
His early interest in railways led to extensive journeys around the country. Much of the material in this book relates to these railway journeys over 10 years. Some chapters concentrate on the growth and development of locations such as York, Darlington, Swindon and London. Other chapters concentrate on the journey and visits to railway depots with background information. The chapters range from Aberdeen to Bristol, Glasgow to Swindon and London to South Wales with some concentration on Yorkshire and the north of England. Retirement has given him the opportunity to review all his materials and assemble them into this book.
The 10 chapters include maps and diagrams to illustrate the text and some chapters introduce ideas that develop a different dimension to other railway books in order to further the understanding of the development of railway centres and networks. The book has over 150 colour photographs and many black and white photos.
Mike’s previous book about Driffield, published in 2004, is now sold out. A smaller high quality publication of only 500 copies about the Restoration of St. Mary’s Church, Little Driffield in 1890 is currently on sale; only available from the author as all profits go towards the repair and restoration of the church tower due to take place in 2014.
Steaming Along was published in December 2013 and Mike will be launching his book at the Farmers’ Market at the show ground on January 4. Subsequently it will be available in local shops or direct from Mike on 01377 253801.
