East Riding householders, who signed up for the latest round of YORSwitch, could save an average £130 per year following an auction between energy companies.
In the East Riding, almost 2,000 households have registered and were combined with a number of other similar initiatives around the UK, to create a collective of over 54,000 households covering more than 70 local authorities.
This is the sixth such collective auction to be held in the UK since the pilot with South Lakeland District Council a year ago. The largest auction, in April 2013, saw 160,000 households register with special tariffs created for a number of the ‘auction categories’.
As collective switching schemes become better known, they are attracting a mix of the ‘Big Six’ and smaller independent suppliers to the table. There were three winners in this auction who will supply a range of contracts: Scottish Power, Green Star Energy (formerly Pioneer Energy) and British Gas.
Residents will soon get their personal offer letters or emails letting them know if they’ll be saving against their current deal and, if so, how much money they could save. This comes at a time when energy prices and the strain on household budgets is on the increase and will be a welcome relief for many during the colder months.
Councillor Symon Fraser, cabinet portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Almost 2,000 homes have now made significant savings on their energy bills through the YORSwitch scheme. Registration is quick and easy either online or at your local customer service centre. It’s worth giving it a try and be one of the homes saving in 2014.”
There is no obligation for people to accept their personal offer, but if they do it’s easy and straightforward and the new provider will take care of the whole switching process.
In total, 65 per cent of people who registered for the scheme could save on their energy bills if they choose to switch.
