Billy praises hospital staff
ONE of Nafferton's most recognisable residents has this week praised the treatment he received at an East Riding hospital after he suffered a heart attack.
Billy Taylor is probably best known for the work he does litter picking around the village.
His efforts, which have made him a familiar sight around the area, have earned him praise and awards from community leaders in recent months.
But that work was halted earlier this month when he suffered a heart attack at his home.
Now recovered and back on his rounds collecting discarded rubbish in Nafferton, he has praised ambulance personnel and the staff at the Castle Hill Hospital at Cottingham, where he spent much of his recuperation time.
And he hit out at critics of the health service, saying: "I'm fed up of people knocking the NHS. It's time they had a bit of praise."
Mr Taylor told the Driffield Post he became ill at his home in early July, but added that the ambulance which took him to Scarborough Hospital had been "very, very quick" to reach him.
From Scarborough, he was then transferred to Castle Hill the following day, where he was a patient on Ward Seven.
And he said: "I was very, very impressed with Ward Seven.
The staff on there would do anything for you."
He said the staff had quickly found him a wheelchair so he could get to and from the toilet and sit outside if he wished.
He also praised the quality of catering on the ward, describing the "good, hot food" he enjoyed during his stay.
Now back at home, Mr Taylor was back out and about litter picking last week, continuing the work which earned him a special award from the Nafferton In Bloom committee last September.
