BREAKING NEWS - BRIDLINGTON MARINA OUTLINE LAYOUT AGREED - comment on this story
The East Riding of Yorkshire council and its partners, the Harbour Commissioners and Yorkshire Forward, have agreed a preferred lay-out for the proposed Bridlington Marina.
The agreement builds on earlier work by PLB Consulting Ltd (capacity study) and HR Wallingford (hydrodynamic modelling), engineers and urban design professionals, to develop a technically sound outline design.
The preferred layout has undergone further hydrodynamic testing to determine wave conditions in and around the harbour sedimentation and beach erosion. The results have shown much improved conditions in the harbour and entrance and no significant effects on the beaches.
The PLB Consulting Ltd work has been quality checked by the partners and added to by studies of other local marinas. The full needs of the fishing fleet have also been incorporated into the design so that the partners are now confident that there is sufficient space (both land and water) to accommodate demand from private and commercial sectors together with the development associated with the Town Centre Area Action Plan.
The proposed layout of the harbour and marina will now accommodate 74 commercial berths (ranging in size from 6m to 15m) and 320 marina berths (ranging from 6m to 15m) but also allowing for some larger visiting and commercial berths.
Work will now continue to develop a masterplan for the potential development areas, design the access points ro maximise links to the town centre and develop the business plan. Whilst these are still difficult times for public funding, the Marina has been a long term plan for the partners and the commitment to delivery remains.
Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "We have now reached the stage where the harbour and marina lay-out can accommodate the existing Trust Port requirements whilst providing for all the predicted expansion in the marina and the development needed to support the town centre.
"The proposals represent a significant step forward for the marina project and for the future of Bridlington."
George Traves, Chair of Bridlington Harbour Commissioners, said: "The most recent work has shown that, subject to some land issues, an improved harbour can be developed alongside the marina proposals. I look forward to the completed development."
Jan Anderson, Director of Environment for Yorkshire Forward, said:"This is a wonderful step forward for the economic development of Bridlington as a whole, linking to the town centre and the recent investment in and around the Spa'.
A report on the proposed Marina lay-out is due to be presented to the next meeting of East Riding of Yorkshire Council's cabinet on 16 March.
