BUSINESSES in the Driffield area have come out on top in a prestigious regional tourism awards.
The Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School, at Southburn has been crowned Remarkable Newcomer in the second annual Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards (REYTAs).
Kilham Hall Country House retained the Remarkable Night’s Sleep (serviced) Award for the second year running and also scooped the Remarkable East Yorkshire Breakfast Award at the glitzy ceremony held at the Spa, Bridlington.
The awards, which are organised by Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY), honour the very best businesses and individuals working within Hull and East Yorkshire’s tourism industry which generates £615 million a year for the local economy.
Alison Johnson, manager of The Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School said they were surprised to win the award but it will be a huge boost for the school which opened less than six months ago.
“It came as a surprise. We knew we were in with a chance but to actually win it was so exciting,” Alison said.
The judges described the School as “a fabulous addition to Hull and East Yorkshire’s tourism industry” offering “a wide range of courses in modern and well equipped facilities located in a beautiful area.”
Joanne Long, co-owner of Kilham Hall Country House, said she was shocked to be awarded two accolades on the night.
“I was visibly shocked. We just happened to have both awards one after the other.
“I was really hoping to get the best breakfast award because it was being judged by the chief executive of Delicious Yorkshire but we hadn’t even got back to our table when it was announced we had the second award,” said Joanne who runs the business with David Berry.
Kilham Hall Country House was described by the judges as being “absolutely fabulous” and “sophisticated, charming, elegant and a haven in East Yorkshire” with the quality of their breakfast “as close to perfect as is possible.”
Other businesses from the Driffield area who made the finals were: The Wold Cottage, Wold Newton, which received two special recommendations in the Breakfast and Night’s Sleep serviced categories, The Falling Stone, Thwing and The Burton Arms, Burton Fleming which were finalists in the Remarkable Pub category; Harry Foreman of Mr Moo’s, Skipsea who was a finalist in the Remarkably Cool category; Burton Agnes Hall which was a finalist in the Remarkable Experience category; and Wolds Village, Bainton which was a finalist in the Remarkable Night’s Sleep (Serviced) category.
Sixty-five finalists competed to be one of the 13 winners and VHEY chief executive Janet Reuben has spoken of the tough competition.
“The calibre of this year’s finalists was exceptional and it was immensely challenging for our judges to choose the winners.
“The quality of nominations received this year was phenomenal and is reflective of the strength of our tourism industry.”
