Confusion over investment at railway station

COMMUNITY rail leaders have expressed their hope that Driffield passengers could benefit from major investment to improve the town's railway station.

But the organisation responsible for maintaining the rail network has said that no major renovations are planned at the station for the foreseeable future.

Reports this week have suggested that works had been finalised to raise and resurface the station's platforms and refurbish the building.

It had been hoped that new seating and matrix screens could be installed as part of any renovation project.

The programme was thought to have been listed to be carried out in either 2009 or 2010, bringing tens of thousands of pounds of investment to the site.

David Walford, regional development officer for Community Rail Humber, told the Driffield Times that any renovations would help to encourage more passengers, particularly disabled passengers, to use the station.

He said: "We have been pushing for this for a number of our stations."

But a spokesman for Network Rail, the company which is responsible for maintenance and development of the railways nationwide, said yesterday that no projects had been finalised.

She said: "There are no major works proposed for Driffield Station at present. The station is structurally sound and will be maintained in the usual way."

News of possible works at Driffield comes as renovations continue at Bridlington, including a newly refurbished booking office.

Mr Walford added that the railways had also been seeing a 'massive upsurge' in passengers because of rising fuel costs.

Though he admitted the extra costs are also affecting train operators, he said: "It is significant that some of the bus operators are looking to cut services so more people are using the trains."
