THE Driffield Times is looking to reward unsung heroes of the community with a new awards scheme.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Driffield Times, we are today launching the Pride of Driffield Awards to recognise the achievements of local people.

Driffield Times editor Nick Procter said: "We want to reward people who go out of their way to help others and the awards will showcase the caring nature of local people and their many qualities and talents.

"This year is a special year for the Driffield Times because it is our 150th anniversary. We wanted to do something for the community and we see these awards as a fitting way to acknowledge the amazing things local people do for others.

"Please show your appreciation of the many people who go that extra yard for others.

"Nominating someone does not take much time or effort – the people who deserve to be nominated often give up many hours of their time to improve the lives of others.

"We want lots of nominations – there are lots of deserving people in our community."

So tell us about someone you think deserves an award.

You can nominate people who have done something brave or kind or people who spend lots of their time helping others.

The are six categories in the awards:

l Teacher of the Year

l Bright Young Star

l Sports Personality

l Business Personality

l Unsung Hero

l Outstanding Contribution to the Community

Driffield MP Greg Knight is supporting the awards and urged people to make nominations.

People or groups can be nominated by anyone and for any reason. You can also nominate yourself.

If you know someone who is a brilliant neighbour, tell us about them. Maybe you live alone and are elderly and they do your shopping or keep you company.

Whatever it is, if they are a great neighbour let us know.

Do you know of a youngster who does good deeds, has done something really brave or has achieved something special? If so, nominate them for one of our awards and they could get the recognition they deserve.

Which sports player has really impressed you? Has someone overcome adversity to achieve sporting success?

Is your teacher simply the best? Tell us who they are and why!

Do you know a local business person who deserves recognition or someone (or a group) who has contributed something particularly special to make the area a better place to live, work and visit?

To make a nomination, please use the coupon in the Driffield Times on page 3 and send it, along with your reason for nominating the person/group on a separate piece of paper, to:
