Dance hall, cinema, sports venue idea for Tesco store site

DRIFFIELD'S Tesco supermarket should become a cinema, concert hall, dance hall and a sports venue, according to the latest in an ever increasing list of planning applications.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has received an application seeking full planning permission from David Stebbings and Co, whose address is given as PO Box 1, Providence Place, Driffield.

A second set of documents calling for the redevelopment of the former Driffield Cattle Market site and surrounding land, known as Driff9, as a retail space and car parking have been delivered into the town council offices.

They have also been produced by David Stebbings and Co and it is understood that similar documents are currently being processed by the local planning authority, the ERYC.

The design and access statement documents suggest that 496 parking places should be provided within the Driff9 site - 293 more than there are currently, and that 168 of them should be free all day, with 202 free for three hours and 126 pay and display.

To allow access to the site, the document suggests widening of the road on Queen Street, Beck Side and Providence Place.

It is envisaged by David Stebbings and Co that the proposed retail building at Driff9 will be two storey, with retail space at ground floor and storage at first floor.

This will reduce the footprint of the development and allow for more amenity space and cycle parking as well as providing space to enable Queen Street, Beckside and Providence Place to be improved.

Meanwhile, several 'rival' planning applications are set to return to the ERYC planning committee for consideration in the coming months.

They include a proposal by Tesco to redevelop the current Tesco and Kwik Save site, plans by the Driffield Cattle Market Company to redevelop the Driff9 site with a supermarket and other facilities, and a scheme to create an Aldi supermarket development on a site currently occupied by the Viking Centre and the old post office on Middle Street South.
