Display of scheme to transform Riverhead = COMMENT ON THIS STORY

RESIDENTS are being given the chance to have a first glimpse at what Driffield's Riverhead area could look like if ambitious ideas for its redevelopment become reality.

The Driffield Partnership is to unveil an ambitious new vision for the Riverhead area – which could include a museum, houses, shops and restaurants – at a public exhibition in the town.

The draft Driffield Riverhead Concept Statement has been drawn up by East Riding of Yorkshire Council planning and economic regeneration officers and Driffield Navigation Trust.

It outlines the type of development and uses they would like to see in the area next to the 250-year old Driffield canal.

Helen Jackson, market town renaissance co-ordinator, said: "The display of the concept statement is the last stage of a three-month consultation period and everybody is welcome to come along and have a look at the ideas the group has developed.

"Riverhead is a unique place and we want to ensure its character is protected as well as planning and attracting investment into Driffield and the navigation project."

The concept statement, which covers the area south of the town centre including the railway station and land next to the head of the Driffield Canal, includes guiding principles for investment.

The Driffield Navigation Trust and the Driffield Navigation Amenity Association hope to further restore the waterway and create improved facilities for visitors to ensure Riverhead continues to thrive.

David Hamilton, of the Driffield Navigation Trust, said: "The concept statement embodies our vision for the future development of this historic and valuable area of Driffield in the context of the restoration of navigation as a whole.

"We hope we can use this vision to inspire the various funding bodies to support the valuable work done by our teams of volunteers over the past 40 years.

"Let's see the job completed."

The public exhibition will be held at the town council offices, on Market Walk, between 10am and 3pm on Monday February 8 and Tuesday February 9.
