Driffield public house The Tiger Inn is named as one of the best in East Yorkshire by Campaign for Real Ale

A NUMBER of pubs in the Driffield area have been named among the best in the East Riding in the latest Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) awards announced this week.

The town's Tiger Inn has been voted runner-up in the East Yorkshire Town Pub of the Year award by Hull and East Yorkshire branch members.

It's the second successive year that the Market Place venue, which is run by Bill and Lou Cowen, has been named runner-up, this time losing out to the Green Dragon in Beverley for the award.

And staff will be presented with a certificate marking their achievement next Saturday, January 16.

Branch chairman Alan Canvass said: "Both pubs have not only shown a high consistency of standards over the last 12 months, but also over the last two or three years, as they were both also nominated for the 2008 title."

The Tiger is also listed in the 2010 Good Beer Guide and is described as: "An 18th-century coaching inn that was tastefully refurbished a few years ago and has retained its original tap room at the front.

"To the rear is a beer garden with a large decked area and children's play area."

Two other Driffield venues were nominated in the town pub category – the Bell Hotel in Market Place, itself a former runner-up in the category, and the Mariners Arms in Eastgate South.

And another local watering hole, the Wellington Inn at Lund, was shortlisted in the East Yorkshire Village Pub of the Year award.

But they lost out to the Plough Inn at Hollym, who won the prize for the second successive year. The King William IV in Cottingham was voted runner-up.
