Drink-driver was too fast on icy bend

A KILHAM man who got behind the wheel after drinking crashed his car at an "accident blackspot" on an icy road.

Christopher Paul Scrivener, 23, of South Close, pleaded guilty to a single charge of driving while over the prescribed limit at a hearing in Bridlington on Wednesday.

Two other charges of failing to stop after an accident and driving without due care and attention were withdrawn.

The court was told the incident had happened on the B1255 Flamborough Road, Bridlington, at about 3.50am on February 21.

Prosecutor Zoe Simpson said a Seat Leon driven by Scrivener had left the road after colliding with the kerb.

The vehicle overturned and came to rest in a hedge.

Road conditions were said to be icy and the court heard a taxi driver, who had been overtaken by Scrivener before the incident, felt he was driving too fast for the conditions.

Scrivener was later found by police at about 5.15am, having walked back into the town with his friend, who had been a passenger in the car.

Both men suffered minor injuries in the crash.

When interviewed, he admitted drinking before he drove and being behind the wheel at the time of the accident, adding that he had gone too fast at a bend.

And tests at Bridlington Police Station showed Scrivener had a lower reading of 44 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath. The legal limit is 35.

Richard North, mitigating, said his client knew the area well and had been driving at between 40 and 45mph when the accident happened.

He said the scene was also “something of an accident blackspot” and there had been four accidents in the location that night.

He added the case was “most unfortunate” for Scrivener, who feared he was likely to lose his job as a result of being banned from driving.

Scrivener was banned from driving for 14 months but was offered the chance to reduce the length of the ban by completing a drink-drive rehabilitation course.

He was also fined 195 and ordered to pay 85 costs plus a 15 victim surcharge.
