Elderly let down

VULNERABLE people in Yorkshire and Humberside who need help at home are increasingly being let down, new figures revealed by Age Concern show.

A thousand fewer people in the Yorkshire and Humberside are now getting help at home compared to just over a year ago as local authorities are rationing vital services.

The most up-to-date figures for England, released in a recent parliamentary answer, show that the number of home care clients fell over the year to March 2007, despite Government policies aimed at allowing more people to receive care in their own homes.

As a result, more people who need help with day-to-day tasks such as getting up, dressed and washed are being forced to pay for services out of their meagre savings, ask family or friends to help them out or try to get by without any help at all. The charity says that this is another blow for people who need care.
